The Issue
With regard to everything from food to utilities, Tampa Bay had the highest inflation rate in the nation in February. The fact that thousands of adolescents are now identified by districts as homeless or McKinney-Vento Act qualified reflects the pressure on families.
According to ABC Action News, at the end of the 2022-2023 school year, 4,256 HCPS students are designated as McKinney-Vento.
At least 75% of students at 162 Hillsborough schools are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
268 students are residing in vehicles or open areas.
322 people are staying in hotels and motels while
925 are in temporary or emergency shelters.
2,741 people live in shared or doubled-up residences.

By addressing these basic needs, we aim to create a happier and more supplied home environment.
